Summary

Ever wonder what your therapist is really thinking? Now you can find out …

Meet Lori Gottlieb, an insightful and compassionate therapist whose clients present with all kinds of problems。 There’s the struggling new parents; the older woman who feels she has nothing to live for; the self-destructive young alcoholic; and the terminally ill 35-year-old newlywed。 And there’s John, a narcissistic television producer, who frankly just seems to be a bit of a jerk。 Over the course of a year, they all make progress。

But Gottlieb is not just a therapist — she’s also a patient who's on a journey of her own。 Interspersed with the stories of her clients are her own therapy sessions, as Gottlieb goes in search of the hidden roots of a devastating and life-changing event。

Personal, revealing, funny, and wise, Maybe You Should Talk to Someone opens a rare window onto a world that is most often bound by secrecy, offering an illuminating tour of a profoundly private process。

what a pleasure to read this book , feels like a gift coming at a time when i’m struggling personally to find my own answers as i’m adapting to a new phase in life。 this book provides some good ole ANSWERS , truths you may already know but put eloquently and presented in a thoughtful digestible manner

emphasis on four patients - angry man, cancer victim, alcoholic, senior with a past of bad relationships & parenting - and also the therapists own devastating break-up

Wonderful! This is such an amazing book! I throughly enjoyed each minute。 I could see myself so many times & it really had me in tears so many times。 Definitely pick this one up!

Finally done with this, really took my time to annotate and process what was written。 Don’t really want to pour my heart & soul about what i feel about therapy here, but i really enjoyed the book。 Laughed & teared & mostly reflected。 Loved that Lori wrote the characters to be relatable, many lessons to takeaway, many insightful themes and theories sprinkled in bite sized pieces。 Usually not a fan of self-help but this was one of the books i wanted to read to overcome that。 Honestly not something Finally done with this, really took my time to annotate and process what was written。 Don’t really want to pour my heart & soul about what i feel about therapy here, but i really enjoyed the book。 Laughed & teared & mostly reflected。 Loved that Lori wrote the characters to be relatable, many lessons to takeaway, many insightful themes and theories sprinkled in bite sized pieces。 Usually not a fan of self-help but this was one of the books i wanted to read to overcome that。 Honestly not something i would recommend to everyone though passionate about speaking about mental health; but something i will want to hold close to my heart。 。。。more

1。 An in-depth look into the work of a therapist, and the application of her skills in therapy sessions。2。 The main takeaways will depend on how much the reader pauses to think about how each of the concepts presented in the many therapy sessions depicted relate to their own individual lives。 There isn’t always a silver bullet to solve life’s problems - sometimes we have to face it head on with courage and hope。 A therapist’s session helps to uncover the crux of an issue that needs resolving。3。 1。 An in-depth look into the work of a therapist, and the application of her skills in therapy sessions。2。 The main takeaways will depend on how much the reader pauses to think about how each of the concepts presented in the many therapy sessions depicted relate to their own individual lives。 There isn’t always a silver bullet to solve life’s problems - sometimes we have to face it head on with courage and hope。 A therapist’s session helps to uncover the crux of an issue that needs resolving。3。 Not the most engaging read for me personally, the themes presented can become heavy due to its realism and there can be a lot to take in when you are factoring in your own experiences。4。 Nonetheless, an enriching book that covers a huge array of concepts in great detail and is recommended for people looking to understand themselves and human relationships。 。。。more

You know it’s a good book when you even read the Acknowledgements。 Really cool to see some of the theories I talk about with my colleagues and kids in here。 Also nice to see something so relatable in terms of how a therapist can feel during their sessions。 Just emphasises how sometimes we can see people as their job, but we’re equally as human。

Seemingly more "autobiographical fiction" than memoir, this is an overall entertaining and insightful read for anyone interested in therapy, whether familiar with therapy or not。 As a therapist in training and therapy goer myself, I found quite a bit to underline in the first half, but the second half felt drawn out, repetitive, and a lot of the client dialogue disingenuous。 Seemingly more "autobiographical fiction" than memoir, this is an overall entertaining and insightful read for anyone interested in therapy, whether familiar with therapy or not。 As a therapist in training and therapy goer myself, I found quite a bit to underline in the first half, but the second half felt drawn out, repetitive, and a lot of the client dialogue disingenuous。 。。。more

Fascinating “behind the scenes” look at a therapist, a handful of some of her most memorable clients, and her experience with her own therapist。 As someone with a love for all things psychology and therapy, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book。 It made me cry and smile and feel deeply as I read not only about the author’s clients’ pain and heartbreak, but also her own as she continued to see clients while working through her numerous painful issues。 There were plenty of lessons and eye-openers Fascinating “behind the scenes” look at a therapist, a handful of some of her most memorable clients, and her experience with her own therapist。 As someone with a love for all things psychology and therapy, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book。 It made me cry and smile and feel deeply as I read not only about the author’s clients’ pain and heartbreak, but also her own as she continued to see clients while working through her numerous painful issues。 There were plenty of lessons and eye-openers for me to reflect on with regards to my own life。 Lori Gottlieb is a gifted storyteller and writes with such compassion, vulnerability and honesty about herself。 She practices psychotherapy, which I haven’t been treated with in years since it seems to have been eclipsed by cognitive behavioral therapy, which doesn’t focus as much on past issues and childhood issues but more on changing the present behaviors that cause suffering for clients。 After reading this, I’m reminded that psychotherapy has its place and that I kind of miss having a therapist who delves deep into the farthest corners of my psyche and past。 4。5 stars with half a star removed for using somewhat outdated mental health language like “committed” suicide and calling clients patients。 Otherwise, I highly recommend this book for the beautiful stories and for all the lessons and insights that can be taken from it。 。。。more

The writing and story telling skills of the author are really top notch。 There were some really beautiful quotes and sentences that I will keep revisiting。Guided me in the right direction on talking to someone。 PS: Book can be used as a guide to therapy but not a substitute for it。

It was a beautiful journey of self-discovery and personal growth through Lori Gottlieb’s lens as a therapist and as a patient。 Every human should read this; it inspires compassion and enlightenment, and shines a light on the importance of living a life with meaning, whatever that might mean to each individual。

5/5 for me。 Loved every part of this audiobook and have recommended it to many friends。 Maybe it is my background in psychology or my secret dream of being a therapist? The author did a great job of balancing her experience with her clients, her experience with her own therapist, and some psychology theory throughout the book。

This is one those books which feels like an illicit read due to just how personal and sacred therapy and the even taboo getting help still is , nonetheless, the book handles a number of heavy subjects including loss, personal journey, psyche of a therapist。Overall a very enjoyable book, its an easy read for handling so many emotional subject and broaches how important small improvements are to contributing to the bigger picture。 One aspect I really liked was how each person's description is colo This is one those books which feels like an illicit read due to just how personal and sacred therapy and the even taboo getting help still is , nonetheless, the book handles a number of heavy subjects including loss, personal journey, psyche of a therapist。Overall a very enjoyable book, its an easy read for handling so many emotional subject and broaches how important small improvements are to contributing to the bigger picture。 One aspect I really liked was how each person's description is colored by our perspectives and experiences。 For example seeing one of her patients outside her practice always shows them in a different light。 。。。more

This was recommended by a friend and I wasn’t sure I’d like it but gave it a shot- glad I did, I learned a lot and liked the way the author gave you both sides of the therapy experience 。。。 I appreciated her choices of client stories to illustrate different challenges and progress。 I’m curious about her podcast and other writing now!

I started this book in September 2019 and finished in July 2021, but I read parts of it about 3-4 different times。 It was a lot to take in for one sitting (13。5 hours) and I kind of had to be in the mood for therapy talk。 But she is incredibly interesting- from her story of how she became a therapist, to working with her own therapist (thanks to a nasty breakup) to stories with 4 of her own patients (including a woman with cancer and a Hollywood producer)。 It’s fascinating hearing how a therapis I started this book in September 2019 and finished in July 2021, but I read parts of it about 3-4 different times。 It was a lot to take in for one sitting (13。5 hours) and I kind of had to be in the mood for therapy talk。 But she is incredibly interesting- from her story of how she became a therapist, to working with her own therapist (thanks to a nasty breakup) to stories with 4 of her own patients (including a woman with cancer and a Hollywood producer)。 It’s fascinating hearing how a therapist processes conversations and I feel like there is so much to learn from what she shares。 It’s also comforting to know that she herself found so much help from a therapist, even when she can recognize the skills he’s employing, it helps her realize what she is doing。 Even therapists (knowing all the skills) need therapists。 Listening to her reminds me so much of the two therapists I have gone to as an adult, in two different cities, and how much I loved and appreciated them。 Grateful she shared her stories!“Do I want advice, counseling, or self-understanding, therapy? Everyone should get therapy, even therapists。 I loved the weaving narratives in this book, from the author's private turmoils, her journey in becoming a therapist, and the slow, triumphant reveals of the patient stories and their metamorphosis。 Everyone should get therapy, even therapists。 I loved the weaving narratives in this book, from the author's private turmoils, her journey in becoming a therapist, and the slow, triumphant reveals of the patient stories and their metamorphosis。 。。。more

Would definitely recommend for anyone who would like a peek into a psychologist's life。 As a psychologist student myself, this book really made it all more "real" for me, compared to all the dry theoretical uni stuff。 It helped me see myself in the future roll。 Really well written, I've started to care about every patient described。 Loved it, 10/10。 Would definitely recommend for anyone who would like a peek into a psychologist's life。 As a psychologist student myself, this book really made it all more "real" for me, compared to all the dry theoretical uni stuff。 It helped me see myself in the future roll。 Really well written, I've started to care about every patient described。 Loved it, 10/10。 。。。more
